Nintendo warns Wii users not to get too excited

TOKYO : Nintendo on Thursday warned players of its new Wii video game console not to get too carried away when swinging the controller as they could accidently throw it into their television sets.

Human Computation

Google TechTalks
July 26, 2006

Luis von Ahn is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University, where he also received his Ph.D. in 2005. Previously, Luis obtained a B.S. in mathematics from Duke University in 2000. He is the recipient of a Microsoft Research Fellowship.

ABSTRACT
Tasks like image recognition are trivial for humans, but continue to challenge even the most sophisticated computer programs. This talk introduces a paradigm for utilizing human processing power to solve problems that computers cannot yet solve. Traditional approaches to solving such problems focus on improving software. I advocate a novel approach: constructively channel human brainpower using computer games. For example, the ESP Game, described in this talk, is an enjoyable online game -- many people play over 40 hours a week -- and when people play, they help label images on the Web with descriptive keywords. These keywords can be used to significantly improve the accuracy of image search. People play the game not because they want to help, but because they enjoy it.

I describe other examples of "games with a purpose": Peekaboom, which helps determine the location of objects in images, and Verbosity, which collects common-sense knowledge. I also explain a general approach for constructing games with a purpose.

My very first contact with Wii

I was at the shopping complex the other day, lord behold! there was a stand exbihiting Wii Nintendo new revolutionary game console. I quickly rushing myself to join in the fun. I ask the staff if I could try to play. She handed me a pearly white colour remote control (yes, it is Wii-mote) unit and told me how to press which button for the game of bowling and when to press after the swinging to release the ball. I do as she has instructed and yeh it feel like a real bowling game! in the bowling alley. I play for a while and I feel the real work out of my arms - it just so real. I definitely really like this new way of playing video game - it sure does beat the joystick.

Blogging on all matter about wii

I'd like to dedicate this blog to wii - Nintendo Game Console. Why a blog solely about wii? Well, when I first saw this incredible prototype launch from E3 2004's video I just knew it has to be an evolution for the gaming world. The revolution is not in the console but it is the controller so name wiimote - that's the revolution! Over the coming weeks and months and years and centuries( no kidding!) I will be blogging on wii related news, technology, hack, mod, happy, funny and sad incidents - right here. In another I want this blog to be the ultimate universe on wii.
